MCPA members represent the majority of steel-making coal produced in the U.S.

The Metallurgical Coal Producers Association (MCPA), a regional association of leading U.S. metallurgical (met) coal producers in Appalachia, estimates that it now represents the majority of met coal produced on an annual basis in the U.S. MCPA producing members account for roughly 55% of met coal produced in the U.S. – all mined within a four-state region (Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia).

The MCPA recently welcomed Blackhawk Mining, LLC to the association which, together with members Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Coronado Global, Ramaco, Robindale Energy, and United Coal Company (a subsidiary of Metinvest) account for over 34 million tons of met coal produced in 2022. According to the Energy Information Administration, 62 million tons of met coal were sold in the same year.

“The MCPA exists solely to represent and advocate for the met coal industry,” said Ben Beakes, president of the MCPA. “Our producing members are the leaders of the met coal industry. We are proud of the positive impact they have by mining the coal that is used to make steel needed to rebuild our world’s infrastructure and manufacture everyday products which affect so many lives.” MCPA members employ 7,000 miners and support staff at 68 different mines in four different states.

“As we move forward, we will continue to educate stakeholders that met coal makes steel,” Beakes said. “Our members are leading the way. It’s our job to make others aware that without met coal we could not have bridges, automobiles, appliances and so much more.”
